Re-stringing – $0
Get real. I’m happy to string your instrument for the price of the strings. Or bring your own. This is not a garage that charges $20 to install an air filter or windshield wipers. But, I guarantee I’ll find something that needs tweaking!
Full Setup
The spa package. Get some zing in your strings (or out of them, Taylor and Seagull owners) and some twang in your thang (always desirable). Sounds heavenly, plays like butter, looks like a supermodel, and personalized to your technique. If you ever tell me, “extra light strings, super low action, with no buzz,” I will charge you $1000 under the P.A.F. “Unreasonable Request Act of 1957” and demand you demonstrate your amazing whispery clean technique.
Fit, Shape & Polish Nut
Fun Fact: Even high-dollar guitars are shipped with generous nut height, with the assumption that discerning players always get personalized setups. Inexpensive and mid-grade guitars can have brutally high nuts that often make beginners bleed and quit. Experience a new level of playability, tuning stability and intonation up the neck. Choose between self-lubricating (ooh!) TUSQ or non-lubricating (ouch!) bone. A must-have for capo-users. If you use a spring-style Kyser-like capo, I will personally throw it in the river in a cloudy midnight ritual.
Fret Work:
Up to 3 high spots (lifting frets)? Don’t worry. It’s covered in your Full Setup package. Multiple wonky frets? A full fret level, radiusing, crown and polish? Fret replacement? Stainless steel fret replacement on a bound fretboard? Stainless steel microtonal frets on a Richlite board with maple binding? From zero to ka-ching. We’ll talk.
Broken Headstock:
Dear Cherished Gibson Owner: I will provide you a reference to a great repair shop that will charge you a shocking amount of money to repair a design flaw that should be warrantied. But I’m not doing it. Cheers!
Acoustic Sadddle
Buying a pre-shaped TUSQ or bespoke bone saddle gets you 50% of the way to great action and tone. The rest is what you do with the height, final shaping, bottom profile, intonation and break angle. Taylor owners: rather than sanding your saddle, we replace two wooden shims in the neck and fingerboard, and change your action elegantly. Breaking News: I can now get Taylor shims through a retailer.
Bridge re-glue
Guitar construction is inconsistent. Bridge lift is all about the difficulty in removal, prep, and clamping. A Martin with wood/hide/fish glue is ideal, because it’s an intelligent design and I have special tools. A disposable G-series Takamine, post-2006 Seagull or (gasp) Ovation with epoxy and questionable top wood? Get out your wallet.
Acoustic pickup system install
This is one of those “call me” scenarios. Do you want a pristine, microphone-like sound for small cafés, or are you touring with Chicago surrounded by percussion and trumpets? First, we’ll choose a system ($25 to $500). Then, am I replacing an existing unit or do I need to drill end jack/bridge slot holes on a 1937 Martin? Le price, she will vary, là.
Electronics
Ah, wiring. The elusive buzz. The intermittent crackling ground wire. Dirty pots. The 60-cycle hum at your mother-in-law’s, but not at home. The desire to put P-90’s in a Hannah Montana 3/4 scale Costco guitar with a Floyd Rose and push-pull pots. Hell ya! Let’s do it!
